My New Hours: So Far

As most all of you know, one of my biggest changes lately has been the recent (as of the 4th of October) shift in my work hours.  I went from working from about 4pm until midnight M-F to 1pm-9pm on Mondays and 12pm-8pm the rest of the week.

It may not seem like that big of a change, but it has made a world of difference.  Even though there are many nights that I still do the same ol’ same ol’ of heading straight home and vegging, it has had a huge effect on my attitude and how I feel.  There are nights that I’ve actually met friends after work, and even just knowing that it’s a possibility has been a refreshing change.

One of my concerns was an increase in road traffic and commute time getting to and from work.  Yes, the roads are a bit more congested.  Yes, the traffic is a bit more annoying.  But since I’m still going to and from work at off-peak times, I’ve only added maybe 5-10 minutes to my commute time.  Not too shabby.

I was also concerned about some of the people I’d be working with.  So far so good.  Just a couple of incidents have been annoying.  I can handle that.  Another concern was work load.  Yes, some days the amount of rush jobs have been a bit overwhelming, but we’ve handled them.  And I honestly think it makes the time go a bit faster (though when working on a rush project, you actually don’t want it to).   It’s been almost a challenge – a good one.

In a way, I almost feel as though my stress level has taken a nosedive, even with the extra work/rush projects and new personalities to work with.  Before, there was a great deal of negativity that I was having to deal with on a daily basis, and I tend to be a sponge, picking up the emotions of those around me.  I still have to deal with it a bit, because I am still working fairly late, but it has been greatly reduced.

I feel more human with more normal sleeping hours.  Last night, I was asleep at 2am!  Still late, I know, but considering I used to go to bed at 5, 6, 7, or even 8am, that’s major progress.  And now I’m getting up around 10am every day instead of 2pm.  For some reason, though, I’m feeling like I have less time at home.  It’s odd, because I’m home for the exact same amount of time as I was before.  Still working on figuring out what time I need to get up to get to work on time and trying to get myself to sleep sooner.  I also feel that my weekends have been much more productive and that I’ve felt much less lethargic during them.

My eating still hasn’t been so great lately.  Have only been half-paying attention to what’s been going into my mouth and am still trying to work out an eating schedule.  I think this is the area that has been the most adversely affected by my time shift.  But to be honest, I’m also not eating as much at work because I’ve been busier.  I never did eat much at work, for some reason (it was always at home that I had the problem), but on my new hours, I find myself skipping snacks and not eating all that I brought for “lunch.”  Hopefully that’ll balance out the extra I’ve been eating at home.  But I’m working on getting a schedule in place.

So overall, I’m really enjoying this shift and life change.  My boss asked me yesterday how I’m liking the new hours and I told her that I’m loving them.  The day crew has also welcomed me with open arms.  One of them is already a good friend and I think another has the potential to become one.  The others, I’m sure, are just happy to have someone take on some of the work. 😛  My boss said she thought that it seemed to be working out really well.  Of course, I’ve only been doing this for a week and a half now, so the jury’s still out.  But I have hope that the new hours will be something I enjoy enough to make more permanent.

Keep your fingers crossed.

PS: On a side note, I finally allowed my car stereo to wander past the song “Hello World” on the Lady Antebellum CD and have now listened to all of the songs on it.  I came across this one today, called “Ready to Love Again,” that I thought was just absolutely beautiful and thought I’d share it with you.

PPS: I know I haven’t mentioned “Lbs.” much lately, but that’s because as far as I can tell, there hasn’t been a lot of news about it lately.  Here are a couple of pictures from their showing in North Carolina.  You may remember that I posted a while back about one of the songs that was written for the movie, entitled “Monday Came,” and how much it meant to me.  I was pleasantly surprised to receive a comment and an email from Michael Carey, one of the men involved in making the song (producer, recording, musician).  You can click here to read the post I wrote about it and then scroll down to the comments to check out the extra info he provided.

Thank you so much for your comments & messages re: my last post.  They meant a lot.  Hope you’re all having a beautiful week!
